May 2011. When Mr. Xia was 21 years old, the house was turned into the collective canteen for the commune. The whole outer wall, wooden beam and certain inner wall of the house were painted with white plaster. Mr. Xia and his wife, who has passed away several years ago, have been washing the house to clean off the plaster since 1981.
